4 Pieces of Trivia You Should Know About St. Patrick’s Day

Impress your friends on St. Patrick’s Day with these fun pieces of trivia.

St. Patrick’s Day is right around the corner! Sure, you know to don your best green gear and keep an eye out for four-leaf clovers and leprechauns, but do you know much else about the holiday? Not many people do! Impress your friends with these interesting pieces of St. Patrick’s Day trivia this Thursday.

  • Corn allergies? You can still have corned beef. Corned beef is a staple of the upcoming holiday, but – surprise! – there’s actually not a single corn kernel involved in its making. The “corn” refers to the large grains of salt used to cure the meat.
  • You might want to try some blue. Although St. Patrick and green seem to go together like peanut butter and jelly, Paddy was actually traditionally associated with blue (in most artwork depicting him, he’s seen in blue vestments). We now wear green on March 17th because St. Patrick’s Day is associated with Ireland, or the Emerald Isle.
  • There’s as much Guinness as you think. Does it feel like every bar is pouring the Irish beer on St. Paddy’s Day? Well, a whole lot of them are. According to WalletHub, about 13 million pints of Guinness are drank across the world on March 17th.
  • We have a reason to celebrate. A high number of Americans claim Irish heritage. In fact, 34 states have a population of at least 10 percent Irish-Americans. In New Hampshire and Massachusetts, one in five people is Irish-American!
