Preparing for a Power Outage
Items to Have Ready
- Water – One gallon per person, per day. Make sure have at least 3-days’ worth for every member of your family, including any pets.
- Food – Non-perishable and easy-to-prepare items are best for these types of scenarios.
- Flashlight
- Multi-purpose tool
- Solar and battery-powered cellphone charger – Emergency stations usually have backup generators, so it’s best to keep your phone charged in case you need to contact them.
- Sanitation and personal hygiene items
- Hand-crank radio – Tune into the weather channel in order to get up-to-the-minute news on your situation and when you can expect the power to turn back on.
Food Preservation
- Your fridge is a good insulator and will keep your food cold and free from harmful bacteria. In order to keep the internal temperature as cold as possible do your best to keep the refrigerator cold.
- Use one or more coolers to help keep your temperature-sensitive food nice and cold. Cover the food with ice to keep food colder for those long blackouts.
