It’s time to celebrate with these Fourth of July fun facts.

Summer is here and it’s time to celebrate the Fourth of July. From barbecues to pool parties to fireworks displays, there’s lots to do to celebrate Independence Day. But before you engage in all the festivities, learn a little more about the holiday’s history. Here are a few fun facts about the Fourth of July.

  • Independence was first declared on July 2nd, not July 4th. In 1776, Congress has voted to approve the Declaration of Independence, however, the motion wasn’t processed until the 4th. According to John Adams, Independence Day should have been celebrated on the second.
  • Hot dogs have long been a staple food of the Fourth of July. In fact, as many as 155 million hot dogs are sold every July 4th. Other top foods sold for the occasion include popsicles, and watermelon.
  • Independence isn’t celebrated in the U.S. alone. The Philippines celebrate Independence Day on July 4th, and Rwanda celebrates Liberation Day on July 4th. It’s also not uncommon for certain countries with lots of American expats to hold unofficial celebrations.
  • The fourth of July holds plenty of significance when it comes to American history. Not only is it the day that Independence is celebrated, but it also marks the day two of America’s founding fathers (and U.S. presidents) died. Both Thomas Jefferson and John Adams both died on July 4, 1826. President James Monroe also died on July 4 in 1831.
  • Fourth of July festivities are held across the country. In Bristol, Rhode Island they celebrate from Flag Day on July 14 through July 4th. It’s a tradition that’s lasted since 1785. In Gatlinberg, Tennessee, a midnight parade starts all the Fourth of July Festivities.
