Squash is an incredibly underrated food that deserves more love.
While pumpkins are arguably the most popular type of squash, there are many different kinds of squashes for you to enjoy. Learn more about the different squash varieties that are available in fall and winter!
Butternut
The second-most popular squash is the beige, bell-shaped squash known as butternut squash. Its rind is unusual in that it is very smooth and peels easily. Additionally, it goes well with many flavors like smoky bacon, balsamic vinegar, and cinnamon!
Hubbard
The hubbard squash weighs anywhere from 8 to 20 pounds and can vary from a grayish blue color to an intense orange. Be warned, its rind is hard and rubbery, so be careful when you cut it. However, once you get into it, its flesh is both savory and sweet and best enjoyed pureed or mashed.
Kabocha
The kabocha squash is native to Japan and is only now making its rounds through U.S. markets. Though its jade-like exterior is hard, it reveals a bright orange, almost fiber-less flesh that has a honey-like sweetness to it. It is delicious when baked or steamed.
Spaghetti
Spaghetti squash is a long yellow, ovular squash that contains a stringy flesh on the inside. Interestingly, when these strands are cooked, they separate and turn into mild-tasting strands that resemble spaghetti noodles.
